The more you give thanks, the happier you are.
Research on happiness over the past two decades shows that practicing gratitude increases positive emotions, reduces the risk of depression, improves your relationships and makes you more resilient in times of stress.
Unfortunately, we tend to focus on the negatives in our lives. It has been estimated that we have as many as 10,000 thoughts a day and that the majority of those thoughts are negative. We spend more time on our disappointments, resentments, worries and fears - than on what is working in our lives.
Your thoughts produce physiological changes in your body. Negative thoughts, worry, anger, stress cause your blood pressure to rise, your heart rate to speed up and trigger the release of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol that cause disease. Likewise focusing on positive thoughts produces the feel good hormones like oxytocin, and other calming, relaxing agents. Feeling grateful reduces stress, anxiety and depression and increases self-esteem and happiness. Gratitude makes you feel good.
By making gratitude a habit, we become happier, more connected with others and more open for good things to come into our lives. Gratitude is a spiritual practice that is at the core of all of my programs. This meditation shows you ways in which you can expand the experience of gratitude in your life.
