What is Prayer?
People are sometimes uncomfortable with prayer because they believe it to be a religious practice tied to an official religion. They often think that there is a specific way they have to pray that they may have learned growing up that makes them uncomfortable.
Increasingly people say they are “spiritual not religious” and by that they mean they are not following the practices or dogma of an organized religion that tells them what they have to believe. In fact, 75% of millennials describe themselves in this way. A huge shift is taking place.
We recognize the divine in our lives. We sense the presence of a Higher Power and we value our connection to it. And we want to experience the divine directly. We don’t want to depend on an intermediary. We want to feel the connection. Many of us have experienced moments when we experience the divine. Maybe it was in a yoga class, through meditation, drugs or flow experiences - but we want to be able to have this experience in our daily lives and to be able to sustain this state as a way of being.
And yet to many people, including those who are spiritual, prayer seems complicated and difficult. They feel constrained by the forms of prayer they may have heard as a child and that there is “a right way” to pray.
If you have struggled with prayer and feel that “it’s hard to pray” or that you “just aren’t good at it”, I know how you feel. I grew up in a Christian household where I was taught specific prayers. When I became a practitioner I learned a new way of praying called “Spiritual Mind Treatment.” This is a very powerful and beautiful form of prayer. I loved using it and praying for people. However after many years, I found myself going through a spiritual crisis. When I prayed for myself, my treatments felt hollow, prayer became hard and eventually, I could no longer pray for myself.
One day I felt so angry and frustrated at life that I started speaking to God expressing just how I felt without try to fit my language and thoughts into any kind of structure. I told God, I was pissed off. I had worked so hard and tried to do everything to live a good life and nothing was working. For the first time I was talking to God like a real person. I was talking my best friend who I looked to for guidance and support and she had let me down instead of a supreme being on top of a mountain somewhere.
Prayer isn’t complicated. It’s simply talking to your Higher Power or God. Prayer is our direct connection – a person-to-person call. It’s like talking to your best friend who is always there for you – a beloved parent or best friend - who doesn’t judge, condemn or find you wanting. Instead they love you unconditionally and can see the truth of who you are whatever the circumstances.
When we pray, no matter how we pray, we tap into something mysterious and profound. We acknowledge the presence of something bigger and more powerful than ourselves. We open ourselves up to its power to transform – to open our hearts, to create a change of perspective where we see things we have been unable or unwilling to see before, a willingness to listen, to let go, to forgive. We become receptive to possibilities and solutions we had not seen before.
When we pray to our Higher Power we are admitting we can’t do life all by ourselves. We acknowledge that we need help and that opens us up for something more than we can see and imagine from our limited perspective.
Imagine you are flying on a plane during a storm. The plane is rattling and shaking and you feel the turbulence. All you can see and hear is rain, thunder and lightening. You are filled with fear that you are going to die. You begin to pray. You turn it over and ask a power greater than yourself to intervene and save you.
From your vantage point, all you can see is the storm around you. But there is another perspective. If the plane could rise above the storm clouds below, you would see clouds and infinite skies all around you. At that higher vantage point, it’s a smooth ride.
In the plane, flying through the storm, you can’t see the clouds and infinite skies above. Prayer is a higher perspective vibration. It’s about being willing to let go of your limited perspective and open yourself up to that Higher Power perspective. Prayer is recognition of a power and presence in your life that is greater than you that can transform your life.
Prayer is also an act of faith. Some part of you has faith that there is an answer, a solution, a way out. Prayer isn’t the work of the mind. It’s the work of the heart. It doesn’t matter how you pray, what matters is the feeling behind the words you say. There is no wrong or right way to pray. If you come from the heart, you can’t go wrong.
